to gorgeous papers!
(I’ve just ordered one like this…I’m a little gutted that it’s a gift, but I’m trying to be grown up about it!)

I have great friends…
The Helvetica sampler which turned up here was given to two friends who returned the favour and gave me a lovely poster which they designed for my birthday.
It’s been sat on the sideboard since May, and we’ve finally got it put up.
I put it in Dragon’s room because when I lie on his bed trying to get him to sleep I can read it. For some reason, looking at the dinosaur alphabet really makes me grumpy (although I love the bunnies).
Vernon the Whale and The Forest Protector are by Penelope and Pip and the large poster is, of course The Gashleycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey who is absolutely my favourite illustrator of all time. There was a poster of his on our landing and a fair few books of his about the house which I read frequently as a child and I think they were very influential on my artistic style (for better or worse).

You know that thing you can’t help doing when you go around to someone’s house and start checking out their bookcase and music collections? (Co-incidentally, what will we do when books and music are all electronic and there’s nothing to make silent judgements about?)
I wonder if charity shops do the same thing?

I got a Kindle for Hanukkah and so far I’m loving it! My taste in Victorian literature means that so far, I haven’t bought a single book, and I’ve just started Moby Dick so it might be a while until I have to.
It prompted me to go through my cheap classics shelf and replace the uninspiring copies with electronic versions. I started trying to buy vintage versions of the ones I liked, and I’ll still keep an eye out in charity shops, but this is a space and cost-effective way of doing things, I think.

I came across an article about illustrator Dave Devries who has a project called The Monster Engine whose basic premise is to faithfully copy childrens’ drawings and then complete the three dimensional aspects and colour them in.
I have to admit that my first reaction was one of horror, not about the technique but the subject matter. The world is a child’s head is a strange place and I wasn’t sure I could handle it!

Someone is leaving gorgeous (and mysterious) paper sculptures throughout Edinburgh’s cultural institutions…

They’re mainly based around the works of Ian Rankin and are pro books, culture and film and very anti-funding cuts.

We have a lot of green around the house, however not very much of the botanical variety as we are very, very indifferent gardeners!
This is Lucinda reading one of Dragon’s favourite books.
We have two of the ‘That’s not my…’ series, I had to swap the upstairs TNM Dinosaur downstairs when I caught Batman reciting it from memory…backwards.
