Joye chose this week’s Weekword which is synesthesia. I know two people with the same form of synethesia (music to colour), which I suppose isn’t too surprising (Wikipedia gives an estimate of 1 in 23 people may have some form of synesthesia).
My brother in law (who says that Rhapsody in Blue is really yellow) is a musician and mathematician, both of which seem to be highly influenced by synesthesthetic responses (although it could just as easily be genetics, the last three generations of that family have got the same maths degree from the same university).
In the interest of supporting synesthetes (watch me make up words) go have a look at his website and buy a lovely CD for someone’s Christmas present (I like Piano Dance…and not just because I’m Track 3)!
Go have a look at Joye’s blog to see everyone’s Weekwords.

I know someone who is a synethete who sees words/sounds/letters as colours (not always the same colour either), she is a damn good Librarian as she can always find the misshelved books with ease!

Synaesthete is the Proper Word, you’re not making anything up. I know cos I did psychology in uni and everyfink. *dons whitecoat, drops rat into maze, places cheese*

All that education paid off after all!
I suspect that you and he would get on swimmingly, someday when you’re in the same country I’ll try to arrange it.

I’ve been to a concert that had music as part of the production… I can imagine that “heady” people with creative minds might be more likely to have “synaesthete”… I wonder if my daughter who is visually impaired has these experiences??
